What Is National Register Citizens ( NRC ) ?

  

The National Civil Register of India is a register created by the Government of India which contains the names of Indian citizens who are genuine (legitimate) citizens of Assam.  This register was specially created for Assam only.  But on 20 November 2014, the Home Minister of India, Amit Shah, gave a statement in Parliament that this register will be expanded across India.  It was said that it was prepared in 1951 after 1951 census of India.  It was prepared on the basis of descriptions of all the individuals mentioned during the census.  Only those who have arrived in Assam before becoming Bangladesh (before 25 March 1971), will be considered citizens of India.

Let us tell you that the Indian National Citizen Register is called the Indian National Register of Citizens in English, which is also the full form of NRC, and Assam is the first state in India to have a National Register of Citizens (NRC).  After completion of investigation of over two crore claims submitted for citizenship (about 38 lakh people of whom there were doubts on the documents submitted), the NRC by the court.  The first draft of was ordered to be published by 31 December 2017.  The first draft of the much awaited National Civil Register (NRC) was published on 31 December 2017.  About 3.29 crore applications were submitted in Assam to legally identify as a citizen of India, out of which only 19 crore people have been named.


The civil register in Assam was last updated in 1951.  At that time, the names of a total of 80 lakh citizens were registered in Assam.


A 6-year-old movement was launched in 1979 by the All Assam Students Union (AASU), demanding the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants.  The movement was peaceful after the signing of the Assam Accord on 15 August 1985.



Chronology :


The National Register of Citizens was first prepared in the year 1951.

After the signing of the Assam Accord on August 15, 1985, the movement of the All Assam Students' Union was peaceful.

The process of civil verification started in December 2012 in view of the increasing population of Bangladeshis in Assam.  Applications were invited for the state of Assam in May 2015.

On 31 December 2017, the first version of the draft 'National Civil Register' (NRC) was released by the Government of Assam.

3.29 crore applications were received for recognition as Indian citizens.  1.9 lack of these

People have been considered as legitimate Indian citizens.  The remaining 1.39 crore applications were under investigation at various levels.
